We unconsciously create external challenges, such as nighttime eating, to avoid dealing with our internal conflicts. It’s a negative coping mechanism reflecting our unmet emotional needs, and with awareness and compassion, you can shift this pattern!

Your emotional food cravings are important messengers letting you know that a neglected (and often unconscious) part of yourself feels unsafe, sad, lonely, anxious, frustrated, tired, alone or scared. And that part is looking for your support and attention!

That’s why an emotional food craving is really a craving or a hunger for UNCONDITIONAL LOVE.

Think of your emotions as children who need you to care for them…

If a child was feeling scared, would you push that child away?

If a child was feeling bored, tired, sad or lonely, would you ignore them? Or tell them to eat some chocolate?  


If a child was feeling angry and full of rage, would you tell them to eat a bag of cookies, a tub of ice cream or have a drink?


Would you shame a child for feeling terrified, anxious, overwhelmed or upset?


No, of course not!

But we do this to ourselves all the time.

At some point, you have to decide to no longer abandon yourself and your emotions.

Hi there! I'm Heather K. Jones, registered dietitian and a soulful emotional eating guide.

I'm the Skinnytaste dietitian and the co-author of the New York Times best-selling Skinnytaste cookbooks. I also spent seven years working for the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) and its award-winning newsletter, Nutrition Action Healthletter.
